00:00:00.000 [Music]
00:00:04.480 Hey, what's going on, man?
00:00:05.680 My mind is um a mountain of thoughts.
00:00:10.559 How did I know that was coming?
00:00:12.719 It's just a lot of thoughts in there.
00:00:14.639 Big brain stuff.
00:00:15.839 Not ones either. Little brain stuff.
00:00:18.160 Yeah,
00:00:18.400 little brain stuff. Yeah, there's no no
00:00:20.480 pinky in the brain here. It's just uh
00:00:22.720 probably more like Morty from Rick and
00:00:25.359 Morty. A very small dumb brain.
00:00:27.359 Well, listen. Speaking about all things
00:00:28.880 mind, we're going to talk about the new
00:00:30.720 single from Deft Tones, My Mind is a
00:00:32.558 Mountain. But before we do that, thank
00:00:34.239 you to to everyone who has jumped in and
00:00:37.680 subscribed to the channel and followed
00:00:39.840 us on the various streaming platforms.
00:00:41.440 We appreciate it so much. If you are a
00:00:43.600 heavy music fan and you have any
00:00:46.000 interest in this sort of stuff, we would
00:00:47.280 love it if you'd uh subscribe. Hit the
00:00:49.360 button. I promise we're not going to
00:00:50.640 charge a penny for it. you know, like uh
00:00:52.800 like the videos, throw a comment down on
00:00:54.640 what kind of stuff you'd like to see us
00:00:56.480 talk about in the future, but we really
00:00:58.399 really do appreciate it. We do this for
00:01:00.320 fun and we like taking a whole bunch of
00:01:02.239 people along for the ride. So, thank
00:01:03.600 you. Thank you all so much for uh for
00:01:05.438 sticking around with us. But
00:01:06.640 yeah, thank you. Thank you. you know, we
00:01:09.040 do this for for giggles, you know, and
00:01:11.439 it's uh it's a kind of a joy that people
00:01:14.560 actually write to us and say hello and
00:01:17.439 give us feedback and uh and that we get
00:01:19.759 to talk to the musicians that are, you
00:01:22.080 know, writing the the soundtrack to our
00:01:23.680 lives. It's it's incredible that we get
00:01:25.840 to do that. So, thank you to all of you.
00:01:28.159 Without your subscriptions, your
00:01:30.240 participation, we wouldn't get a chance
00:01:32.720 to talk to the musicians that we love as
00:01:35.040 much as you do. So, thank you.
00:01:36.560 Yeah. Thank you. And speaking of of
00:01:38.240 interviews, we've got some fun stuff
00:01:39.680 coming up. We are putting together a
00:01:41.360 date with Greg Kubaki, the guitar player
00:01:44.159 from Carbomb. There's fun stuff coming
00:01:46.240 and we appreciate you all hanging out
00:01:47.680 with us uh for that ride. So, but today
00:01:50.560 we're talking about the new single from
00:01:52.399 Deft Tones, My Mind is a Mountain. It is
00:01:55.040 very exciting. The new album, Private
00:01:57.360 Music, drops on August 22nd of this
00:01:59.759 year, 2025.
00:02:02.000 And I'm excited about it. Let's get into
00:02:04.079 it.
00:02:17.599 Yeah, this sounds like White Pony era
00:02:20.080 deaf tones. They've gone back to their
00:02:22.000 roots. It's hard-hitting. It's uh Steven
00:02:24.640 Carpenter uh playing guitar and you
00:02:26.640 know, he is front and center on this
00:02:28.400 track. Abe Cunningham. Uh, Chino Marino
00:02:31.120 is the vocalist and I kind of hearken
00:02:34.319 Chino as being the greatest showman not
00:02:36.959 named Hugh Jackman. He just owns the
00:02:39.680 stage. He can uh whip people into a
00:02:42.959 frenzy. And my friend Matt recently went
00:02:45.120 and saw the deaf tones with his daughter
00:02:46.959 and he said that they were incredible.
00:02:49.200 Chino's fit and he was running around
00:02:51.120 the stage like he was in his 20s and he
00:02:53.760 still sounds absolutely magnificent and
00:02:56.480 uh he sounds great on this track. And
00:02:58.400 then obviously uh Frank Delgado is also
00:03:00.560 in the band.
00:03:01.200 Frank Delgado uh is on turntables, keys,
00:03:04.480 samples, a lot of the electronic stuff.
00:03:06.400 Fred Sablin is on bass. He's played with
00:03:09.120 them. He's played live with them since
00:03:11.200 202122.
00:03:12.959 He replaced Sergio Vega. So that's the
00:03:16.080 line out. Apparently Fred is now an
00:03:18.000 official member of the band. Not
00:03:19.599 entirely sure. Someone please comment
00:03:21.519 and correct us if we don't have that
00:03:23.120 right. It does not show that they he is
00:03:26.239 official official. When you go into
00:03:28.800 Wikipedia, it shows
00:03:30.159 well we know Wikipedia is the pinnacle
00:03:32.560 of authority journalism.
00:03:34.319 Listen, I agree to disagree.
00:03:36.080 Well, regardless, it is signature deaf
00:03:38.959 tones for these years.
00:03:40.560 It sure is. And it's pulsating signature
00:03:44.000 deaf tones. It's uh it hits and hits and
00:03:46.480 hits and hits and hits and hits all the
00:03:48.480 way through. Uh, which is great because
00:03:51.760 they got into some trouble a little
00:03:53.360 while back. Chino is part of a a side
00:03:55.920 project called Crosses and they put out
00:03:58.159 an album called Gore that kind of was
00:04:01.040 more emotion kind of posh hotely, if you
00:04:05.519 will.
00:04:05.840 Okay. Sure.
00:04:06.879 People didn't love it. The fans didn't
00:04:08.799 love it. And so I think that they've
00:04:10.720 been doing a little bit of some uh
00:04:12.720 payback to the fans. And this record, if
00:04:15.680 it's any indicator, there's a white
00:04:17.680 snake with a green background on the
00:04:19.440 cover. Generally speaking, when you have
00:04:21.199 a snake on anything, you better be a
00:04:24.080 little bit heavier than you've been. And
00:04:26.320 so, I I suspect that they're kind of
00:04:28.160 giving back and this will be a little
00:04:29.600 bit more hard-hitting. Uh, private music
00:04:32.000 will be hard-hitting. Well, I hope so. I
00:04:34.560 love the track. I love how it opens with
00:04:36.880 Steven Carpenter and Abe. Steven
00:04:39.280 Carpenters's tones and chord choices.
00:04:41.759 Again, to me, they're just signature
00:04:44.160 deaf tones. It sounds so good. His tone
00:04:46.800 is is is lovely. It was very excited as
00:04:50.400 soon as the song started. Abee's
00:04:52.320 performance on this track is great. The
00:04:55.600 parts that he wrote for it, I think, are
00:04:57.520 so cool. He did a lot of things that
00:04:59.919 might not stick out to to most most
00:05:02.880 folks, but they certainly as a drummer,
00:05:04.560 they stuck out to me. He does cool
00:05:06.320 things like the use of triplets, a
00:05:08.639 triplet feel, varying between the symbol
00:05:11.280 and the kick drum. You know, when when
00:05:13.120 the symbols in the snare drum are more
00:05:14.639 straight ahead, he's got like a triplet
00:05:16.720 feel on the kicks. And then when the
00:05:18.400 kick and the snare are more straight
00:05:19.600 ahead, he's got the triplets. He's
00:05:21.360 carrying that feel on the symbols. And
00:05:23.120 it just goes so so far. You can get so
00:05:25.680 much mileage in terms of the feel of the
00:05:28.000 groove that he's laying down. So Abee's
00:05:30.479 work is great. I've been a fan of AES
00:05:32.479 for a long time and was excited to hear
00:05:34.320 what he did on this this song and again
00:05:36.800 I hope that this carries through the
00:05:38.320 rest of the album. Fortunately, we don't
00:05:40.080 have long to wait before we get to get
00:05:41.759 to find out.
00:05:42.320 Yeah. And I think we should do another
00:05:43.680 podcast on the full length. I think
00:05:45.039 we're going to be pretty happy with it.
00:05:46.479 I'm sure there'll be plenty of Chino
00:05:48.000 cruning.
00:05:48.880 Mhm.
00:05:49.840 Smising to the mic and then also barking
00:05:52.880 into the mic. It's great to have them
00:05:54.880 back. I think we're seeing a lot of
00:05:57.039 bands returning to form after kind of
00:05:59.680 delving into kind of different avenues
00:06:02.320 with their music. They're coming back to
00:06:04.400 their cores. We we saw the same thing
00:06:06.400 with Biohazard and we're seeing it now
00:06:08.400 with the Deft Tones. The classic sound,
00:06:10.479 the classic elements of what made these
00:06:12.639 bands a household name um are back and I
00:06:16.080 I applaud them for that as much as I
00:06:18.160 applaud us getting subscribers.
00:06:19.680 Nick Rasculinix produced this. He has
00:06:22.960 worked with the band before on Diamond
00:06:25.199 Eyes and Coin Yokan and he has got a
00:06:29.280 he's got a producer touch that I think
00:06:31.680 is is noticeable on those records. And
00:06:34.880 again, I think this is signature deaf
00:06:37.840 tones for me. Now, how much of that is
00:06:39.759 Nick's hand as a producer? I'm not sure,
00:06:42.240 but I love it.
00:06:43.520 Yeah. Well, and and and Daryl the cat
00:06:45.919 loves rocket skates that is on Diamond
00:06:48.240 Eyes. And it does actually have a kind
00:06:50.400 of a Diamond Eyes feel to it, which is,
00:06:52.960 you know, very cool. And again, I like
00:06:55.280 that they've gone back to their roots.
00:06:57.520 I love when bands stay consistent. I
00:07:00.000 thought that the Deaf Tones in recent
00:07:01.599 years had they'd have songs that you
00:07:04.160 could see or hear playing in a really
00:07:06.639 nice hotel, which is weird. taking a
00:07:08.960 leak in a really nice hotel listening to
00:07:10.960 this really mellow, you know, couping
00:07:13.520 Chino Marino and it's like not really
00:07:16.160 seven words from Nosebleleed from way
00:07:18.400 back in the day. For those who know,
00:07:20.319 those who know, it's a pretty violent
00:07:22.160 track with a lot of swears and it's a
00:07:25.039 it's a rager. It's a ripper. That's the
00:07:27.199 deaf tones that I grew up with. It was
00:07:29.520 prevalent for uh you know on WWLR in
00:07:32.880 college. We played deaf tones all the
00:07:35.360 time. So, you know, for them to come
00:07:37.440 back to the heaviness, it's great to see
00:07:39.120 it. Leave the the the couping in the
00:07:42.240 hotel for later on when you're elderly.
00:07:44.800 You can still do it then, but be heavy
00:07:47.199 still.
00:07:47.599 I like it. I I love Chino's vocals on
00:07:49.759 this, too. Maybe could have brought the
00:07:51.919 vocals a little bit more up front in the
00:07:54.000 mix. However, I will say that for me,
00:07:57.280 the fact that they're pushed back just a
00:07:59.120 tiny bit, it lends to that the Chino
00:08:01.840 mystique.
00:08:02.879 Sure.
00:08:03.520 You know, and so it's not a bad thing at
00:08:05.199 I think it's a great mix from a
00:08:06.960 production standpoint. It's it's really
00:08:08.879 well put together. The captures are
00:08:10.560 great. The performances are super solid.
00:08:12.960 The parts that everybody wrote are
00:08:14.639 great. And it's a really solid mix. It's
00:08:16.800 an enjoyable song to listen to. I've had
00:08:19.199 it on repeat for days now. Same here. Uh
00:08:22.319 love the artwork, too. That green
00:08:24.240 background with the white snake is just
00:08:26.160 so well done, so creative and simple. It
00:08:29.360 doesn't have to be this crazy thing that
00:08:32.240 you come up with. And you know, I just
00:08:34.559 did a social media post about going to
00:08:36.799 the Museum of Modern Art in New York
00:08:38.958 City, and there's some crazy crazy stuff
00:08:42.000 that these artists had put thousands of
00:08:45.440 hours into, right? But some of the best
00:08:48.080 art was the most simplistic, you know,
00:08:50.160 and it really really stood out. Like
00:08:51.839 Andy Warhol's um, you know, soup
00:08:54.080 containers, the Campbell soup
00:08:55.519 containers, pretty simple, but yet
00:08:57.920 somehow it has stood the test of time.
00:08:59.920 And I think that the deaf tones have
00:09:01.600 done a really good job of doing that
00:09:03.360 with some of their their covers are just
00:09:05.200 very very simple like the deaf tone
00:09:07.040 self-titled the the album with hexog on
00:09:09.279 it's just a skull with some some flowers
00:09:11.519 coming out of it. Um Diamond Eyes
00:09:13.600 believe that's the one that has the owl
00:09:15.440 on it. So it's just these interesting
00:09:17.760 covers but it's real life sometimes
00:09:20.560 nature. It's an interesting approach and
00:09:22.560 very simple.
00:09:23.279 I well it's part you know you're a
00:09:25.360 you're a marketing guy. It's an
00:09:27.200 interesting It's an interesting study to
00:09:29.360 find out how much the visual element
00:09:31.360 that a band utilizes or employs can fold
00:09:34.320 into how you feel about an album.
00:09:37.040 Whether that's a good thing, a bad
00:09:38.480 thing, I'm certainly not in no position
00:09:40.160 to say, but it's always interesting to
00:09:42.000 look at the choices that a band makes on
00:09:43.680 the visual side when they do release an
00:09:45.680 album or a single or what have you.
00:09:47.440 Well, the Deaf Tones have always been
00:09:48.800 like that. But I mean, their first album
00:09:50.240 had that um I guess it's a booger sucker
00:09:53.360 for babies or maybe, you know, or or
00:09:55.760 sucks ear wax. That's the thing you push
00:09:57.360 in. You push it in, put it in a baby's
00:09:59.519 nose or in its ear, and then it'll suck
00:10:01.839 it out for you. I don't even know what
00:10:03.279 the thing is called.
00:10:04.320 Nasal aspirator. Nasal aspirator is what
00:10:07.440 we were looking for there. Continue.
00:10:09.440 But that's what's on the cover. There's
00:10:11.120 not a kid out there that's going to not
00:10:13.360 see that on a on a record or a CD at the
00:10:16.160 time and go, "That looks cool." And then
00:10:18.160 the de has this very elegant, you know,
00:10:20.720 yeah, the script,
00:10:21.760 signature script that so you put that on
00:10:24.240 top of the booger sucker and it's like
00:10:26.640 you're going to pick it up and listen to
00:10:28.560 it. How can you not?
00:10:30.160 Well, this is a great song. Uh, I hope
00:10:32.720 that we get a an album's worth of music
00:10:34.959 that has a very similar flavor. We will
00:10:37.279 find out in just a couple of weeks.
00:10:38.560 Well, I think you should go stick a
00:10:40.240 booger sucker up your nose and clean
00:10:42.320 out, you know, your nose and
00:10:44.160 I just might
00:10:44.959 splatter it down on a table and put out
00:10:46.640 your own album.
00:10:47.279 I just, you know what? Uh, when we hit
00:10:48.959 our next tier of subscribers, we, you
00:10:50.959 know, hit 300 or whatever, maybe we'll
00:10:53.200 we'll hand out signature [ __ ] Talk
00:10:55.279 Reviews, Booger Suckers, as as a thank
00:10:57.360 you gift.
00:10:58.160 Put it Yeah, we'll get those branded.
00:11:00.160 That'd be great.
00:11:00.880 All right. Excellent stuff. Thanks for
00:11:02.480 bringing it to the table, man.
00:11:03.839 Yeah, of course. See you. See you.
00:11:07.160 [Music]
