The Riff Machine of Modern Crossover Thrash

Hailing from Dallas, Texas, Blake Ibanez is the architectural force behind some of the most punishing and memorable guitar riffs in modern metal. As we frequently break down on ShitTalkReviews, it takes a specific kind of raw intensity to keep thrash relevant today, and Ibanez has spent the last 15 years proving he is exactly that kind of player.Ibanez burst onto the scene in 2008 when, at just 16 years old, he co-founded Power Trip with the late, legendary frontman Riley Gale. By drawing inspiration from extreme genres, 80s thrash, and NYHC, Ibanez forged a signature tremolo-heavy sound. His blistering six-string work propelled the band to international metal stardom, culminating in the monumental 2017 album Nightmare Logic and a Grammy nomination for the massive track "Executioner's Tax (Swing of the Axe)".

Following Gale's tragic passing in 2020, Ibanez channeled his creative energy into a new Fort Worth-based supergroup, Fugitive, formed in 2022 alongside Skourge vocalist Seth Gilmore and members of Creeping Death. While Power Trip operates at a breakneck, Slayer-esque pace, Ibanez describes Fugitive as a heavier, looser "thrash 'n' roll" project—striking a groove closer to Motörhead and Venom. Between Fugitive's crushing Maniac EP and their recent blistering single "Spheres Of Virulence," Ibanez continues to prove that Texas heat remains a potent force in underground metal. With Power Trip recently making a return to the stage and Fugitive continually churning out tectonic plate-shifting aggression, Blake Ibanez is carrying the torch for crossover thrash into a new era.
